    This is one of several drawings by Rembrandt of female elephants in different poses. This elephant may even be one called Hansken, a female despite her name, known to have been in Holland in 1641. Behind and to the right of the animal are the outlines of three figures.

In the 18th century the painting became known as the Night Watch, in 19th century it continued to be known as the Night Watch and in the 20th century "the Night Watch" was still the name of the painting. So far the name has not been altered in the 21st century.
